Careers Options
The Founder's vision was to create a secondary school to educate, challenge and inspire future leaders of Malawi; and, indeed, despite the relative youth of the institution, many distinguished alumni have already established themselves as prominent figures in politics, medicine, law, architecture, business, farming and in other areas, both within Malawi itself and internationally.
Kamuzu Academy aims to prepare all its pupils for life beyond their school career and, at an early stage, encourages them to consider the opportunities available. There is a Careers Advisor who oversees the counselling of all senior students. Each pupil in Form Four and Form Five has a timetabled period of one hour twenty minutes devoted to developing their long-term plans for further education and employment. These pupils are encouraged to undertake individual research online and from the extensive resources accessible in the library. The vast body of literature available for perusal is a reflection of the disparate aspirations of a diverse student population which allows for an approach tailored for each individual. By the end of the Fifth Form, each pupil has created a CV and has practised making applications to various hypothetical institutions.
In the Sixth Form, greater focus is given to the immediate aftermath of school life. Most Kamuzu Academy students aim to secure a place in tertiary education either in Malawi, South Africa or, in some cases, as far afield as the UK and North America. Tutors discuss their options on an individual basis, however, a number of professionals, who, between them, pursue a range of careers, are regularly invited to address the Year Group as a whole. Alumni are especially welcome to return and offer supplementary careers advice to senior pupils.
