Physical Education & Sport

Due to the 100% boarding nature of the school, sport plays a major role at the Academy, providing both the opportunity to compete at high standards, and also to take part on a social level. The facilities to achieve this are excellent. These include two squash and four floodlit tennis courts, two swimming pools, a full-size athletics track, a nine-hole golf course and well maintained playing fields, which are among the best in the country.

Lessons

The physical education programme is based largely on the UK curriculum. Students in Form One receive two lessons of eighty minutes each per week, and the rest of the pupils receive one lesson. The various sports played in all three terms depend mostly on the climate.

The physical education programme is augmented by a wide-ranging programme of physical extra-curricular activities, which currently include golf, Karate and volleyball.

House Matches

The House matches programme runs in line with the sports being played during lesson time. House matches are played throughout the year. The eight Houses are: Chilowa, M'Mbelwa, Chilanga and Nthalire (Boys); and Mlonyeni, Kapeni, Gomani and Kilupula (Girls). House captains are selected for each House at the beginning of the year, and it is their duty to oversee their House. The matches take place four times a week:

Saturday
9.15am - 10.45am
Form 2
Monday
4.00pm - 5.00pm
Form 3 & 4
Tuesday
4.00pm - 5.00pm
Form 1
Wednesday
4.00pm - 5.00pm
Form 5 & 6

Games are played on a league basis and points are awarded to each House accordingly. These points are then accumulated at the end of the academic year to determine the overall positions.

Competitive Sport

The Academy produces high standard teams in all sports. Fixtures are played weekly on a Saturday afternoon and the teams train twice a week.

Outside Influence

For the past four years, the Academy has hosted numerous 'Schools of Excellence.' Players are selected nationwide to join the camp where they are trained before attending international tournaments. In 2006 the Football Under-21 Schools' team finished second in the 'Zimbabwe Coca-Cola Championship.' Two of the Academy's students, Khumbo Tembo and Handson Mvaya, played in the competition, and Handson Mvaya proceeded to represent the Malawi Under-21 National team.
