Kamuzu Academy Hosts Tree-Planting Ceremony and Launches India Corner – 24th January 2026
Kamuzu Academy in
Kasungu District has hosted a tree-planting ceremony alongside the launch of a
new India Corner in its library, marking a celebration of environmental
stewardship and international educational cooperation.
The event featured
the donation of 150 books from the Government of India, covering literature,
history, philosophy, science, culture, and contemporary studies. Speaking at
the ceremony, the Guest of Honour, the High Commissioner of India to Malawi,
His Excellency Mr. Amararam Gujar, praised the Academy’s legacy since its
founding in 1981 by Malawi’s first President, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda. He
highlighted the institution’s enduring commitment to academic excellence,
holistic formation and character development.
The tree-planting
exercise was linked to India’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative
(“One Tree in the Name of Mother”), which encourages individuals to honour
those who nurture them by planting a tree.
Students at Kamuzu
Academy dedicated trees to parents, guardians, teachers and the nation,
symbolising gratitude as well as responsibility toward future generations.
The High
Commissioner commended the Academy’s leadership for upholding the Founder’s
vision while adapting to contemporary challenges, He expressed hope that both
the young trees and the institution would continue to flourish in the years
ahead.
