THE COST OF COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS

THE COST OF COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS

Have you ever looked at someone and quietly thought, “I wish I had their life”?

Maybe they have the latest iPhone, the newest Nike Air Max or Jordans, the clothes everyone is talking about, a PS5 while you are still using a PS4, or parents who drive the kind of car you can only dream about. Maybe they get better grades, have more friends, travel more, look more confident, or always seem to have what you wish you had.

And slowly, without even noticing, you begin to feel that your own life is somehow not enough. That is the danger of comparison. We compare our ordinary days with someone else's best moments. We see their new phone, their designer trainers, their holidays, their grades, their popularity, but we do not see their disappointments, insecurities, family struggles or private battles.

Things arrive at different times for different people. Someone your age with a car is not proof you're behind. It might just mean their moment came first. Yours might come at thirty-five instead of your current age. That doesn't make it smaller or a lesser achievement. Life is not a race where everyone is supposed to arrive at the same place at the same time. Your friend may have the latest iPhone today. Someone else may have the grades you want. Another may have the confidence, opportunities or lifestyle you wish you had. None of that takes anything away from what you can become.

The greatest tragedy is not that someone else has more than you. It is that you can become so focused on what they have that you fail to appreciate what is already in your hands, and fail to build what could one day be yours. So, the next time you find yourself comparing your life to someone else's, pause and ask yourself: “Am I so busy wishing I had their life that I am forgetting to build my own?”

You do not need to have everything today. You are still becoming. Your story is still being written. Your opportunities will come at different times, in different ways, and sometimes from places you never expected. One day, someone may look at the life you built and wish they had the courage to build theirs too like you.
