YOUR ROOMMATE, YOUR BROTHER / SISTER IN THE HOSTEL

YOUR ROOMMATE, YOUR BROTHER / SISTER IN THE HOSTEL

October 12, 2026 6:26 AM Kamuzu Academy

A roommate is more than just someone you share a room with; they are your first family away from home. In boarding life, your roommate is your daily companion, your study partner, and your first line of psycho-social support. A good roommate relationship reduces loneliness, homesickness and stress, and it creates a peaceful environment that helps both of you perform better in all areas.

The golden rule is communication. Talk openly but respectfully when something bothers you, instead of gossiping or fighting. Support each other emotionally — listen, encourage, and report to the matron, patron or Housemaster/Housemistress if your roommate seems withdrawn, sick, or troubled.

Genesis 4:9 talks about being a brother’s/sister's keeper, and yes, you are your "meshos" keeper. God has placed your roommate next to you for a reason. Being a keeper means you look out for one another — you do not ignore each other when one is struggling, sad, or making a wrong choice. Check on each other. Celebrate each other’s small wins.

Boarding life will test you, but remember: no one succeeds alone. The kindness you show your roommate today is the brotherhood and sisterhood you will cherish for life. Be the roommate you wish you had and that way, together, you will reach much greater heights.
